Destroy the Icon- Progress 5 (Final)

Image
For my final product, I did another Lapis Lazuli iteration on RBG to completely destroy the icon. I then added the Moon Crown of Isis, which the High Priestess wears. I am pretty happy with how this turned out, and the unexpected turn the symbolism took. Overall, I think every part of this piece has strong meaning which lifts the composition.

When diving more into research, I was looking up the symbolism behind specific tarot cards. I found that the High Priestess card very well represented the message I was trying to convey with this project. One quote I liked describing the High Priestess was, " The High Priestess is a woman who’s already lived a lot. She does not represent a young girl. To become the High Priestess, one has to go through many experiences and different phases of life, love and health." I think this card helps portray RBG and her essence.

After playing around with a few iterations, I have added some more color to my project. I added Venus around RBG as it is the planet that represents femininity. I also added an overlay of a close up butterfly's wing to represent metamorphosis in a woman's life.

After looking more into natural elements and patterns and their meaning, I wanted to find some elements that represented femininity and equality. I added the iteration of a Lotus flower, as it represents the core of a woman's potent yin essence in Taoist texts. I then added an iteration of a serpent skin pattern over the Lotus, following the ancient Egyptian's representation meaning nature and beauty tied to divine sexuality. I think this element is important when acknowledging RBG's lifelong fight for women's reproductive rights.

I first started my iteration of RBG by looking up symbolic stones and natural textures relating to strength and wisdom. After doing research, I decided to blend the background with the texture of Obsidian, as it represents strength. I also added an iteration of Lapis Lazuli, as it was used in Ancient Egypt to bring fairness and wisdom.

Destroy the Icon- Project Update

I decided to change my project to a more well known female icon, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. I decided to use this picture as I have seen it all over the internet since her passing, and do my best to convey her strength and the divine femininity with use of symbolic textures and patterns.

I follow a lot of accounts on Instagram that dive into analyzing iconic pop culture movements in the late 20th century and early 2000's. I decided to use these accounts as my inspiration when looking for my first picture to start with. I decided to go with this picture of Sharon Tate because she is someone idolized and remembered unfortunately for her terrible death, rather than the life she led. I am excited to play around with photoshop to see how it goes!

Fantasy Object- Final Project

Image
For the final assignment, it was a little difficult to make it look the way I had planned. I had wanted to add in more fantasy elements (monster hands creeping out of dryer). However, I do think the spotlight and tile floor were effective in capturing the viewers eye.
